Serve With Ascension

Mission Outreach/Serve commits to the words of Matthew 25:  “I was hungry and you fed me, I was a stranger and you took me in…..” These are the words of Jesus as He was preparing to ascend into heaven. He was very clear that out of love for Him, we would share that love with those on earth who were in need. These words motivate us to live out our love for Jesus through our love for others. Ascension has determined that we would provide opportunities to carry this out and to serve those most in need through our partnerships globally and locally.

As we select our Community Partners, we identify agencies or programs that serve those most in need whether it be feeding the hungry, providing shelter to the homeless or stranger, visiting the sick or providing clothes for those in need. We not only give monetary donations out of our budget, we look for ways to be directly involved through in-kind donations and volunteering. This is a true response to the hymn we sang a few weeks ago, Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart. The opportunities are here, it is up to each of us to respond.

If each person in the congregation pledged to do one small effort of service, we could change our community! We have a lot of special ways to do this coming in the next weeks and months. Watch the e-alerts and bulletin announcements and check out the Mission Outreach Facebook page for opportunities to serve. We update the opportunities regularly.

Healing Hearts, one of our Community Partners, is a program for families who have experienced loss. We will be supporting their work with families in need of support whether through death, divorce, deployment, separation through migration, imprisonment or any other loss. We will be providing a meal for the families prior to their session on Monday, Feb. 19, at First United Methodist Church. We will need donations of soup in a crock pot, bread or crackers, fruit and cookies. Please see the available slots in the Sign-Up Genius and click on your selection for volunteering or donating. Food should be brought to Ascension before 3 p.m. or right before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, when the servers arrive. Servers will be done by 6:15 p.m.

Do you shop at Target? If you shop at Target, you have a chance to help the Hope Center. When you are shopping on the Target Circle app, click on “My Target” then go to Target Circle and under available earnings, click on “Vote for Nonprofits.” Vote for Hope Center. That is all you have to do and your votes will help win support for the Hope Center. What a fun and easy way to support one of our partners!

Hope Center is officially moved into the new building. Check out the pictures on our Mission Outreach Facebook page. They are already serving meals and have a beautiful new Clothing Closet. They will be able to provide many new services for the people of Waukesha. Several of our groups already are serving meals at the Hope Center. Are you interested in serving? Are you willing to help sort the donations? See the Hope Center website for more information about volunteering or contact Shirley Wehmeier.

Did you know that one third of the people served through the Food Pantry of Waukesha County are babies and children? They have a special Baby Care program where they offer (when available) baby formula, baby food, diapers, wipes and other hygiene items for children three and younger. This program ensures that families with infants and young children have the foods and hygiene products they need. Food needs increase in the winter as more people are seeking help during this time of year. Donations can be taken directly to the Food Pantry or brought to our Donation Center and placed in the appropriate bin.

Our county Creation Care/Green Team has many offerings available in their newsletter for congregations and people of faith to live out their faith through how they care for God’s creation. There are a lot of faith-based programs and activities that can enhance our ability to care for creation as a part of our faith life. To find out more about this, go to https://www.waukeshacountygreenteam.org/creation-care-network.  Thank you to everyone who brought in used Christmas lights for disposal, keeping them from the landfills. This simple act makes a difference.

The Food Faith and Farming Network Winter Farmer’s Market is at Ascension on Sunday, March 10. This is always a special event and we will need volunteers to help with a lot of different parts of the day. Watch for announcements and opportunities to help with the day. The day includes a very busy market and a brunch made with ingredients from the farmers.

Drought in Tanzania Creating Economic Crisis

In addition to the health impact of the drought in Tanzania, it is also damaging the economy. For many of the families in the region where we partner, their only income is from the sale of crops or livestock. After three consecutive years of failed crops, these families have no money. As a result, they can no longer manage to pay school fees or hospital bills. Some parents have stopped sending their children to school because they are unable to pay the fees. The Diocese of Meru sister parish office just shared with us that for the most part, their schools and hospitals and clinics have been unable to pay their staff in eleven months. Even though they haven’t been paid in nearly a year and there is no sign of a paycheck on the horizon, the doctors, nurses, and teachers are still showing up to work every day. Most pastors are in the same situation. They have faith that God will provide. In the meantime, they are unable to pay the new higher costs for food and fuel.

There is good news. We were able to send the money from our recent fundraiser for school lunches for Samaria and Savana primary schools in July. It was sent just in time. Pastor Makenge sent us a message a few days prior to the wire transfer that the school had run out of food and the children were going days at a time without eating. Thanks to Ascension’s continued support, the children once again have food at least once a day.

The sides of Mount Meru itself have not yet experienced drought, so there will be at least one more year of a thriving coffee crop. More than ever, it is improving the lives of coffee farmers in Tanzania and keeping some money flowing into the economy when you purchase Mt. Meru Coffee.

Ascension also generously stepped up following our July 9 appeal to support the hunger crisis fund for the 8000 families in crisis in Tanzania. We ask that you prayerfully consider making a recurring gift to provide ongoing support until a more sustainable solution can be figured out. Go to https://tinyurl.com/GiftatGMS and scroll down to find Meru Diocese Gifts > Meru Hunger Relief Crisis (4th down). 100% of your donation goes directly to the purchase of food. Asante Sana! (Thank you!)

Celebration Day in San Jorge, El Salvador

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are big days of celebration in the Salvadoran Lutheran church. Typically, the church would provide a gift to every honoree on that day as well as provide a celebratory luncheon for the entire congregation. In order to save money, this year their council decided to have one big celebration for both days, as well as honoring all graduates at the same time. Pastora Blanca’s extended family all donated prizes for a series of raffles to raise money for the gifts and they also cooked and donated the meal for the luncheon. They were all happy to be together for the celebrations again!

Care for Creation – Solar Power

Are you curious about what is required to add solar power energy to your home? Ascension’s Creation Care Ministry is hosting a Solar Power Hour on August 31st at 6:30 to help homeowners understand the basics of solar energy, and inform about helpful resources and programs that are available to implement solar power. The Waukesha County Green Team will provide an overview of the 2022 group buy program called “Grow Solar Jefferson+Waukesha” where homeowners can obtain substantial discounts. This event is open to Ascension members and the local community. For additional information, visit Grow Solar.

SOPHIA Multicultural Fair ~ Aug. 13, 11a-6p, Cutler Park

SOPHIA Waukesha has dreamed for years of bringing a multicultural event to Waukesha. It is a great opportunity to celebrate and share our diverse rich cultures and heritages with our neighbors through dance, art, music, fashion, food and community resources. SOPHIA is a social justice organization in Waukesha County working to build healthy neighborhoods where everyone has a chance to succeed. There will be music, dancers, art, informational booths, story tellers, food trucks and more. If you are interested in being part of this event as a volunteer, email admin@sophiawaukesha.org. More info.

Local Assistance for Food Crisis

We have heard about the hunger crisis in Africa but we are also aware of the need for food support in our own community. Rising food prices have led to challenges for both families at home and those that offer support. The Waukesha Food Pantry has higher numbers of people seeking food assistance and has seen a decrease in donations. It is also important for the Food Pantry to have wide varieties of food for those who have special dietary needs. Currently, it has had to reduce the amount of food it can provide to those coming for help. Summer normally sees a decrease in donations due to vacations and changes in routines. With the impact of higher prices for all of the basic life necessities, the Food Pantry is in greater need. To help, bring your donations for the Food Pantry to the Donation Center or deliver them directly to the Food Pantry on Sentry Drive in Waukesha. You can also volunteer to serve and provide a meal at the Hope Center.

October Missions

Afghan Refugees

There has been a lot of media coverage on the Afghan refugees and how it will impact Wisconsin. Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is the primary agency of the Lutheran Church to coordinate nationwide work with refugees and immigrants. Their website explains the national efforts by LIRS to support the Afghan Allies arriving in the US. At this time, advocacy and donations are greatly needed. Lutheran Social Services (LSS) is the local agency that resettles refugees as they come to Wisconsin. The LSS website explains the LSS Wisconsin efforts to support those Afghans who will be resettled in the Milwaukee area after being released from Ft. McCoy. Please check out the “Fact Sheet” on that page for even more detailed information. Currently, financial donations to LSS are the greatest need.

Afghans can only be released from Ft. McCoy into the care of LSS after they have passed screening and LSS is able to guarantee one year of support (all rent, food, transportation, etc.). There is a “Supply List” outlining what is needed for each home set up by LSS. At this time, LSS cannot store items, and does not yet know how many apartments, how many bedrooms, what size beds, and what age of individuals will be relocated. Once they know that information, they will have a very short period of time to set up homes. Ascension or LSS does not have storage space to store donated items at this time.

Information is changing quickly, based on Federal decisions so Ascension will try to keep current on announcements. LSS is focusing on the long welcome after Afghans are released from Ft. McCoy. Several Ascension members serve on the synod Immigration and Refugee Committee and will be able to keep you informed if you have questions. Contact Shirley Wehmeier, shwehmeier@gmail.com.

Tutoring Program

After an 18-month hiatus, our tutoring program re-started on Sept. 18. We are continuing to encourage volunteers to step forward so that we can ensure that all tutor groups have at least two tutors for 2-4 students to provide flexibility for the tutors. We still need helpers with the children. We know from prior years that the program continues to grow as the weeks progress. Several students are involved in sports or school activities that limit them from starting until October. We are pleased to see that they are becoming more active in other activities, so we want to be prepared to welcome them when they return. We have heard from others in the community that they are interested in our program so if we can get additional tutors, we can do more outreach into the community.

Our program provides tutoring classes for adults and kids. Our adults are mostly Burmese and Latinos who are beginning English learners or those who want to advance their English skills. The children range in age from pre-school to high school. The little ones may not have heard much English at home, so they are new to the language. The older children will need help with their homework or more advanced English skills. We will support you in planning how to best work with the students. You will be blessed by working with these amazing people. Contact Barbara Nordberg if you are interested or would like more information.

Thank You!

Thank you to all who have continued to donate to our various partners in the community. During the summer we donated over 1000 bottles of water and six large boxes of Blessing Bags for the homeless to the Hope Center. We have been able to provide food, paper products, snacks and cleaning supplies for the neighbors through our Blessing Box every week throughout the summer. The Little Library continues to provide books for those in our community. Donations to the Food Pantry were delivered twice a month throughout the summer. We delivered six bins of donations to Cross Food Pantry. This is an amazing testimony of faith that in spite of all that is happening in people’s lives, Ascension remains generous with their donations for those who have so much less. When you fed the least of these, you fed Me.

Mt. Meru Coffee Project

Supporting Farmers, Growing Futures, Changing Lives is the mission of the Meru Coffee Project. Established in 1999, the Project enables the small coffee farmers living on the slopes of Mount Meru in Tanzania to have funds available to send their children to school, access and pay for health care, and to support local farm villages, markets, and merchants.

The Project provides small farmers with a fair price for their premium coffee. A fair price provides an increase in farm income, allowing the farmers to support their families with dignity. The coffee project is a part of our partnership in Tanzania. Purchasing and drinking Mt. Meru Premium Tanzanian Coffee is the single most important way in which individuals, congregations, and businesses can support thousands of family coffee farmers in Tanzania.

How can you help? Purchase coffee for your home use, give it as gifts, volunteer to set up, serve and clean up coffee for church on Sundays. Serving and selling Meru coffee has been a long tradition at Ascension. Since the pandemic, we have gradually re-introduced the coffee on Sunday mornings. Your help is needed to continue to do this. Contact the church office or Shirley Wehmeier to volunteer.

NAMIWalks

The date for the annual walk for mental health programs provided by NAMI is October 9. See their website on all the options for participating. NAMI is one of our community partners and provides education, prevention and support for individuals and families impacted by mental illness.

Creation Care

Plenty of beneficial pollinators overwinter in gardens, using plants and debris that are left behind to survive. Hollow canes and dead flower stalks, leaves and ground vegetation, old wood & bark and undisturbed soil are natural shelters for non-migrating bees, butterflies, beetles and other pollinators. How can you do your part?

  • Don’t give away or compost your raked leaves! Keep them in your yard. Spread them about 2” high on all your garden beds and place branches over them to keep them from blowing away. Place the rest in the woods.
  • Postpone pulling up your dead annuals and perennials until spring. They’ll trap whatever leaves blow by, creating their own enriching mulch while shielding insects throughout the winter.
  • Don’t disturb areas of bare soil where many wild bee species, including bumblebees, overwinter in small nests.
  • Leave dead logs where insects may overwinter under peeling bark.

For those of you who think this may be too messy, consider cleaning up just the front edge of the most visible areas and leave the back section until spring. Your eyes will be drawn to the neat edge and you will save your own energy while providing critical winter habitat and shelter for the beautiful moths, butterflies, pollinators and insects that you work so hard to support in the warm months. Your overwintering pollinators will thank you by emerging in the spring and delighting you all over again. Contact Lynn Parkhurst with questions. (Source: University of New Hampshire Extension.)
